kindred collective: the studio

a gathering space for creativity and collaboration

the story behind the studio

I’ve always wanted to have a space where creatives and entrepreneurs could gather – creative women especially – and make art. I wanted to create a space where I could work and shoot (everything from products to people), a space that I could open up to my local community and fellow creators too. I wanted it to be easy to work in, warm and inviting, and accessible to all – with good natural light and a little bit of quirk too.

The name Kindred comes from the idea that we’re all connected, and that creative work helps us uncover those many connections we have to one another. Kindred is tucked into the heart of downtown Black Rock, Connecticut, a thriving waterfront community with delicious food and amazing creativity. It’s currently home to my photography and coaching work, and I know it will become one of my favorite spaces to gather with other creatives. Many thanks to the design gurus at The Bananaland for the branding for this special space.

where is Kindred located?

3002 Fairfield Ave, in the heart of downtown Black Rock.

when is the best time of day to shoot?

Kindred faces southwest, so gorgeous natural light is available year-round. In summer, 9am to 3pm is ideal. In winter, 10am to 2pm is best.

can I shoot video at Kindred?

Absolutely! We are on a relatively busy main street, so if you are looking for total sound insulation, Kindred may not be the best fit.

how do I rent the studio for my shoot or event?

Eventually, we'll have a reservation system so you can reserve your time on your own. For now, please fill out the inquiry form below, or email studio@kristynmillerphotography with your booking request.

yes! there is a bathroom available in the back of the studio. please note: unfortunately, our bathroom doorway is not wide enough for a wheelchair at this time.

what kinds of photography + video are allowed?

The list of what is allowed is way longer than the list of what's not. Here's what you can't shoot: nudes, anything that involves glitter or confetti (yep, we're bummed too), tobacco products, fireworks, smoke bombs, or animals.
