groom makes his bride blush and look down while reading his vows during this mid-winter New York City wedding at 26 Bridge

mid-winter wedding in new york city:

julia + mix

I don’t shoot a ton of weddings in New York City. Even though I worked there for a while, I’ve never considered myself a city girl. When I do shoot a wedding anywhere in the five boroughs, it usually feels like a pretty intimate affair.  Julia and Mix’s mid-winter wedding (in December of 2018) had all the makings of an intimate wedding, plus a rockin’ dance party, ice cream from the local creamery, pie from the neighborhood’s best pie makers, and a hot pretzel stand to close the night out. Kind of all the things Saturdays dream about. Kind of all the things I dream about too.

I loved working with these two. In our video calls leading up to the big day, Julia shared all the lovely details of how they’d be making their venue (a Brooklyn warehouse space called 26 Bridge) feel totally their own. It’s always so fun when a couple takes over a super raw space for their wedding day – seeing how they’ll transform it to fit their vision for a good party is always a treat.

Julia and Mix planned to have everything (ceremony, cocktail, and reception) at 26 Bridge, which gave us a great home base to roam around Brooklyn for portraits and family photos before the ceremony. It was chilly that December day, but even under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge (and cozied up under the matching shawls that Julia got for her girls) the day was lovely and bright—kind of perfect for a mid-winter wedding in New York City!

The ceremony itself was so romantic. The venue was pretty dark, but it created this super intimate feeling for the guests and the wedding party alike — as Julia and Mix said their vows, they were lit by garden lights strung behind the head of the aisle. This was a really fun challenge for me – deciding how I wanted to capture the intimacy and the romance of the setting that they’d so carefully designed for their wedding in a way that really honored it, and conveyed those very same feelings right through to their images.

The whole night was so much fun. These kids knew how to throw a good party! With ice cream from Ample Hills (yes, that Ample Hills) and pies from Pies n’ Thighs, and a hot pretzel stand to cap the evening’s eating off, no one left the dance floor hungry. And it was hard enough to even leave the dance floor — their band (Mixtape) had the crowd rockin’ it out despite the chilly temps outside.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year and a half from this sweet mid-winter wedding in New York City, but these frames are still pretty fresh in my mind. Maybe it was the pie? Congratulations loves!
